About Hot by Thirty

  • Desperate not to spend another summer hiding out in fat and/or maternity clothes, I'm determined to drop thirty pounds of baby weight by my thirtieth birthday- July 18, 2009. How unfortunate, then, that I prefer to spend nap time in front of my television with a vat of ice cream. But I've lost these same thirty pounds twice before and I can do it again. I shall do this by steering clear of white flour and sugar and moving my stumpy legs as fast as they will go on our new treadmill. In front of the television, of course. You can also find me at mightymaggie.com.

I think it's not a great idea to do weight bearing cardio (ie running) EVERY day, so I would just alternate it. And take Sunday off, for goodness sake.

Yay! I am glad you started. My reaction was similar to yours. Even the sore knees. While I have my array of doubts and fears about getting huge(r) legs and worrying how this will mess up my current mojo, the fact is I have committed to it so I will do it. After 30 days I will throw it out the window if I deem necessary.

After 2 days I am feeling it WAY more than I was last night after day one. Look out!

When I first got the shred, I tried doing it every day for like 6 days, and my muscles were ridiculously tired. From everything I remember from strength-training classes in high school and college, you are supposed to give your muscles a break after lifting to let the fibers repair and build up. So now, in theory, I alternate days of either the 30-day shred and running or some other cardio (swimming or biking usually). In practice, I left Jillian at my boyfriend's house two weekends ago (we did the workout together then) and have not seen her since.

YAY Maggie! OK, I had to refrain from posting any more comments until you had tried the Shred, so's I didn't inadvertantly scare you to death. I can report that the push-ups get a lot easier as you build up core strength. Amazing.
Also, I always do about 10 minutes of yoga on my Wii fit after the Shred and I have never been sore after. I know from reading (literally all of the) comments on the internet that most people are very sore the next day. Just a thought.
I did it "every day" for about 2.5 weeks, but at some point I was just too tired. Now I am mixing it in with Wii fit and other videos. I think it's a great short-but-good workout. Level 2 is good and fun. Level 3 is crazy! I did it once and now it's just a goal to do it again some day, you know, when I'm in shape.

I agree with everyone else about alternating to allow muscles to heal/grow between workout days. And congrats on not quitting like Miss Whiny McWhinerpants Joelle (why yes, I am watching BL - just got sucked in this season).

If your knees continue to bother you with lunges and such, it might be worth talking to your doctor and/or seeing physio (if you have coverage for it). I used to have knee problems (as in, after doing a cycle-a-thon in hurt to bend them to sit down for the next month) and found I had patellofemoral syndrome (basically the kneecap is a wee bit off centre and thus rubs every time you bend your knee), and a few months of physio made a huge difference.

All right dammit I'm finally going to buy the thing. BUT I DON'T WANT TO. but I also want to stop being a slobby-looking mama. meh.

Oh, yeah. And I am NOT A FAN of Joelle. She really wierds me out with all of the talking. I agreed with Bob that she needed to shut the eff up and do it. Bob was funny. But why, why??, did the Jillian team do what they did? Why?

I've recently made a commitment to work out on "T" and "S" days. (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday and Saturday)...sad that I need a gimmick to make me accountable. Anyway, I have the 30 day shred and I just work it in. I don't do it every day, nor do I do only it. I basically use it for variety along with other DVDs (TurboJam, KettleBell, Hip Hop Abs, etc).

I've heard so much about that workout that I am considering getting it. You'll have to let me know how it goes after you've done it more.

I haven't read the other comments too, but:
1: My knees hurt, too, and I even got shoe inserts.
2: I think you're supposed to take rest days, anyway, when you're doing so much strength stuff like Jillian does. So I think mixing it up with running is probalby a really good plan.
3. Dude, I LOVE the punching in workout 1 for cardio!! Yay! No jumping! And it does get me out of breath!
4. YES, Joelle needs to get it in GEAR. Am loving the show, actually. I've not watched much of it before this season.

I feel like I should introduce myself if I am going to keep commenting on your blog (and it looks like I am, since we are doing the same "fitness routine", HA!). Hi, I'm Sarah from Alabama and I have two little boys, 7 and 3.5. There. Anyway, I have been alternating the Shred with treadmill running for about two weeks now (on Saturdays I do both!) and I can actually SEE and FEEL new muscles in my arms and stomache already! Yippee! Seems like it still works even if you don't do it every day. Good luck!

Eh, I was hoping you were still putting off Shredding it. Darn it now I have to do it.
It's easier to slack when somebody else is slacking with ya.

I don't watch BL, but "The Soup" showed that clip with Bob yelling at her to Shut the F up. I was cracking up. If I knew what day that show was on, that was enough to make me watch it. Even though I hate reality TV (except Idol)...
