So. I have this friend who works in campus ministry and she asked if I would meet with one of her students. The story, apparently, is this student spent her summer working with the Sisters of Charity (yes, THOSE Sisters of Charity) and came home feeling called to BECOME a Sister of Charity. (Oh wait. I just looked them up. MISSIONARIES of Charity. You know. MOTHER TERESA'S LADIES.) Therefore, as The Only Catholic My Friend Really Knows (At Least That I'm Aware Of) I am the CLEAR choice to speak to a 20-year-old girl ready to commit herself to the MISSIONARIES OF CHARITY. I mean, OBVIOUSLY.
Oh, and here's the kicker: this girl isn't even Catholic. PLOT TWIST!
Sigh. I didn't have the most charitable of reactions when she told me this (charitable! ha!) but I am not so skeptical that I don't believe this can totally happen. And from what she tells me about this girl (which isn't much, since my friend doesn't work with her directly), she's not the type to... I don't know. Be crazy.
ANYWAY. I'm not entirely sure what she will ask me or what she wants to find out about. I can speak to the process of becoming Catholic, having been an RCIA sponsor, and I'm very familiar with the kind of stuff she's currently involved in. But what would YOU think is important to ask or suggest or advise such a person with such a mission? I am extremely unwilling to discourage her in anyway - at the same time, it should be abundantly clear that this is not an easy or quick process, which I'm pretty sure she has figured out already.
When my friend asked I was all, "yeah sure!" and now I'm more like, "uhhhhh, errrrrr, hmmm". She hasn't emailed me yet, and maybe she never will, but if she does, I want to be prepared.
All right, it's your turn. ADVISE.
